1000% #3DBenchy A comparison of the benchy's cost compared to nozzle size

At BLB Industries, we feel that a 3d print should not be regarded as complete when it exits the machine. We would rather see the machine quickly sketch the print and leave the finer details to be treated afterwards. This is from an economic point of view.

Here is why we feel this way

For this comparison we will use the 1000% #3DBenchy that we have previously printed as a comparison product.

With a 0.3mm nozzle you would get every detail and a smooth surface finish. With this nozzle, the benchy would take 230 hours to print with a cost of approximately €13 000.

With a 1mm nozzle you would get all the details but with a rough surface. With this nozzle, the benchy would take 30 hours to print with a cost of approximately €1 700.

With a 2mm nozzle you would still get all the details but with a slightly more rough surface. With this nozzle, the benchy would take 9 hours to print with a cost of approximately €500.

With a 6mm nozzle you would start to loose a lot of details and the benchy would recieve a very rough surface.

The time to print as well as the cost continues to drop with increasing nozzle size all the way to a 6mm nozzle after which the price levels at €150.

Which nozzle do we recommend?

We would recommend the 2mm nozzle since it is cheaper than the smaller nozzles without making a big difference to the surface finish.

If a smoother surface is required, this work could be performed manually after the print. Considering the price difference of around €12 500 between the 2mm nozzle and the 0.3mm nozzle in our example above, treating your prints rather than to having them ready from the machine could result in the savings of thousands of euros.

That is why we at BLB Industries believe that it is better to treat your prints rather than to having them ready from the machine.
